Phil Shiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President, deemed the iPhone 7 + iPhone 7 Plus “the best iPhone iPhone we have ever created” and outlined what makes this smartphone stand out against all others. Visually, the new devices have a 25% brighter display and come in two new color ways, Jet Black and Black, both replacing the Space Gray color-way from previous iPhones. As always, Apple continues to improve their camera, this time with a larger lens and 7 mega pixels on the front camera, two more than on the iPhone 6s + 6s Plus. The biggest camera improvement comes with the iPhone 7 Plus, which has a dual camera for optimal zoom capabilities. Following in the footsteps of other smartphones, the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus are water and dust resistant with an impressive IP67 rating.
What is most likely the biggest change with the next generation of iPhone is the removal of the headphone jack and the introduction of AirPods. AirPods, which will retail for $159, are wireless earbuds that last 5 hours on a single charge and pair to your Apple devices with one easy step. If you’re not ready to give up your traditional headphones, don’t worry. Apple included a headphone jack adapter and headphones that connect via the lightning port in the box.

With all of the new technology these devices offer, the overall performance has also been improved. The A10 fusion chip is the “most powerful ever” in any smartphone and provides a longer battery life than the iPhone 6s or 6s Plus. The new iPhone wasn’t the only exciting new product announced today. Apple also announced the new Apple Watch Series 2 and updates to the App Store. The Apple Watch Series 2 is receiving many new updates with WatchOS3 including a SOS safety feature, extra watch faces & animated stickers. The next generation of Apple Watch is also water resistant up to 50 meters or “swim proof” as Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, put it. This makes the smart watch ideal for swimmers who want to track their progress in and out of the pool.

Athletes were a main focus for Apple when reimagining the Apple Watch which is why they partnered with Nike to create the Apple Watch Nike+ which Trevor Edwards, President of Nike, called “the perfect running partner.” Along with athletics, gaming was a main topic of discussion throughout the event. When the Apple Watch Series 2 is made available to purchase on September 16th, customers will be able to play the game everyone’s been talking about this summer, PokemonGO. While PokemonGo becomes available on the Apple Watch, Nintendo will launch in the App Store. With over 140 billion app downloads already, that number is sure to increase when Mario Kart becomes available in the holiday season.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available for pre-order on September 9th and available for purchase on September 16th.
